This machine harvests the amaranth seed heads in our demonstration field.

This photo illustrates the small size of the cleaned seed.

October 2010
Here are a few of our pumpkins from this season. Some of the interesting heirloom varieties include Jarrahdale (blue/silver) and Rouge Vif d'Etampes (far right) nestled among some more traditional-looking pumpkins.

September 2010
Construction started on the wetland. Funding for this wetland was provided by the Environmental Protection Agency Region 7, through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. Funding support was also provided by the Allen P. and Josephine B. Green Foundation.

A pipe and water control structure will allow us to regulate the wetland's water depth throughout the year.

The wetland construction is now finished, and the shoreline will be seeded with native wetland plants including Indiangrass, blue vervain and green bulrush.

August 2010
Our field corn standing at about 10 ft is towering over Jillian, Kelly and Jesse, our summer interns.

On August 12, 2010, we held a Conservation Field Tour at the farm with the help of several agencies.

Our guest speakers and exhibitors included Rob Christensen of Christensen Construction, Rebecca Spicer of MO River Communities Network, Bob Pierce and Julie Rhoads of University of Missouri, Brian Canaday and Mark McCulloch of MDC and Dwaine Gelnar of NRCS.

Stops on the tour included the permeable paver parking lot, rain garden, vegetative buffer around the lake and quail habitat.

July 2010
Here is a full-grown Cornish cross chicken at 10 weeks old.

This redwing blackbird fledgling is resting on some goldenrod in our wildflower meadow.
Eggplants are thriving in our Jefferson Garden. They are one vegetable that enjoys the summer heat. Here is a 'Rosa Bianca' eggplant developing on the bush.
June 2010
The wildflowers in the meadow are blooming. Below are a few interesting specimens including compass plant, butterfly weed and black-eyed Susans.

May 2010
Born this February, these Dorset lambs are
growing fast. They are always looking for their next meal.

Time sure flies, this chicken is now 5 weeks old.

April 2010
On April 26th, the chicks started to peck their way out of the eggs, which is called pipping.

This newly hatched chick is spending some time in the incubator drying off and fluffing up.

The chicks spend a lot of their day sleeping, and they don't seem to mind where they nap.

The chicks are now a week old and are starting to grow their feathers.

March 2010
Crocuses are one of the first blooming flowers at the farm. They add a splash of color under our mature trees.

February 2010
The winter sunset accentuates a mature shagbark hickory on the farm.

January 2010
With the recent cold spell, the lake has completely frozen over.
